Mark Gardett, PhD

Long story short: I’m an author, editor, book coach, and recovering academic living and working out of Denver, Colorado. I also happen to be a trans/nonbinary person, a philosopher, and an artist.

Long story slightly longer: I have been a writer for as long as I can remember. When I was seven, I sat on the lawn under a makeshift blanket fort and wrote my first book: “The Leprechaun Who Was Always Late.” It was a seven-page morality tale about a leprechaun who always showed up too late to get the gold. If I’m honest, I don’t remember whether he learned anything, or if I just wanted to color pictures of rainbows.

The books I write now don’t generally require as many crayons, but I still love the process of helping people find the story they’re meant to tell, and tell it so the world can hear.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with all kinds of fascinating people, from scientists and engineers to artists, social activists, business founders, and community leaders. I’ve guided writers telling stories about climbing mountains and running marathons, undergoing gender transitions, and finding meaning through terrible experiences. Every story is one-of-a-kind, and one of the most important gifts I offer my authors is total personal attention.

I hold a PhD in English with a specialization in writing and rhetoric. I’ve been a writer, editor, and writing teacher for more than twenty years. I’m a published researcher, poet, essayist, and memoirist. I’ve told hundreds of stories, and I still get a thrill every time I hear a new one.
